The story explores how the Australian government’s racist refugee policies separate families and how that trauma continues across generations. Forced to leave her homeland because of war and conflict, Kayal and her parents escaped to Australia by boat across dangerous waters. A year later Kayal must visit her father while he is held in one of Australia’s many detention centres. 'Visiting My Father' explores five-year-old Kayal’s sentiments, emotions, and struggles as she attempts to come to terms with the fact that her father is still detained.
